Today's orthodontics offer more kinds of braces than ever before. Check out your options:
These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word "braces." However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious "metal-mouth" braces than many adults remember. Plus, new heat-activated archwires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past.
Pros: Least expensive type; colored bands give kids a chance to express themselves
Cons: Most noticeable type of braces
Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth.
Pros: Invisible from outside
Cons: Difficult to clean; more expensive; not appropriate for severe cases; can be more uncomfortable at first; regular adjustments take longer and are more difficult than with traditional braces
Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable.
Pros: Less noticeable than metal braces; move teeth much faster than clear plastic aligners (Invisalign)
Cons: More expensive than metal braces; Brackets can stain easily if patients don’t care for them well
Invisalign consists of a series of 18 to 30 custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks.
Pros:
Cons: Will not work for serious dental problems; only available for adults and teens, not children; more expensive option; can be easily lost and costly to replace; treatment may potentially take longer.
Is Invisalign treatment appropriate for you? For the majority of cases, the answer is yes. Invisalign treatment is clinically proven to be effective for a broad range of teeth straightening cases, from mild to complex. And, we’re continuously innovating to expand that range and get even better results.
These are some common concerns our doctors treat with Invisalign clear aligners:
Gaps between teeth can occur with abnormal continued growth of the jawbone. Missing teeth can also cause the surrounding teeth to shift due to the extra space, creating gaps in your teeth. Spacing issues and gaps between teeth can lead to gum problems (due to lack of protection by the teeth), periodontal pockets and increased risk of periodontal disease.
Overbite occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. It’s typically caused by genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth. This can lead to gum problems or irritation, and/or wear on the lower teeth, and can cause painful jaw and joint problems.
Underbite can occur when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. It’s usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. It can also be caused by missing upper teeth. This can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars, which can lead to tooth wear. It can also cause painful jaw and joint problems.
Open bite is when some teeth are unable to make physical contact with the opposing teeth for a proper bite. Most often caused by a genetic abnormal jaw structure or excessive thumb-sucking, an open bite can cause poor or painful chewing, and even speech impairment. It can also lead to greater issues like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
Teeth crowding occurs when there is simply a lack of room within your jaw for all of your teeth to fit normally. When left untreated, overly crowded teeth can get worse over time, and result in severely crooked teeth. This crowding can lead to plaque accumulation, tooth decay and an increased chance of gum disease.
Crossbite is when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth, and can happen on both the front and the sides of the mouth. Crossbite can cause wear of the teeth, gum disease and bone loss.
Some orthodontic problems such as underbites, large over bites, severe crowding, severely protruded front teeth, and narrow jaws are much easier to correct at a younger age. These corrections usually work best between ages 7 and 10, while the jaw is still growing, and are sometimes referred to as “early intervention” or “Phase I” treatment. Even if you think your child won’t need this sort of treatment, it’s good to have the orthodontist check out the way that your child’s teeth and jaws are developing – not all problems are easily visible to the casual observer. Finally, knowing whether or not future orthodontic treatment or braces will be likely can help families budget for the future.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many alternatives to braces, but there are alternatives to the metal braces that many people immediately picture. You can get clear or tooth-colored brackets and wires , which make braces much less noticeable. Some patients are also eligible for Invisalign clear aligners instead of traditional braces. There are also other types of removable appliance that can help align teeth.
There’s no set “best” age to get braces. For most kids, the best time for braces is generally between ages 10 and 14, when a child’s mouth and head are still growing and the permanent teeth are erupting. The exact time depends on growth and on how quickly a child’s adult teeth come in. However, braces can still be effective in older teenagers and adults.
Absolutely! Orthodontic treatment can benefit adults in the same manner it benefits children... maybe more so. If you have teeth that are misaligned or have spacing issues, braces can provide a beautiful, cosmetically-pleasing smile that will boost your confidence.
Some people may get braces for mostly cosmetic reasons but there are also a number of health benefits to straighter teeth. Straight teeth are easier to clean well, which reduces tooth decay and gingivitis. Correcting the bite also fixes many structural problems, which can reduce jaw pain and make chewing less painful.
Treatment plans vary from six to roughly 30 months. Simpler cases can be finished more quickly. The overall average orthodontic treatment time is roughly 24 months. While the longevity of an orthodontic treatment plan weighs heavily on the level of malocclusion that’s being treated (an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or crowding of the teeth), the patient’s dedication to sticking to the treatment plan assigned to them by their orthodontist can minimize the duration of treatment.
A common reason for needing braces is genetics. For many kids, their mouth is simply too small for their teeth, causing the teeth to crowd together. Crooked teeth and poor jaw growth can also be caused by harmful habits like thumb-sucking, oral posture (mouth breathing, lip-apart posture, “hanging” the mouth open), or early loss of teeth from tooth decay or injury.
When a patient first receives braces they may experience some soreness for several hours after their appointment. This may last a few days for some patients, as their body adapts to the changes that are occurring within their mouth. Similar soreness is common at later appointments when the braces are adjusted. Your orthodontist will recommend over the counter pain relievers to help lessen the discomfort.
The cost of braces depends greatly on the type of brace recommended for the patient and the level of correction that is needed. Please call one of our nearby dental clinics to discuss your specific situation.
